For years, I’ve said that no matter what house I’m in, decorating is not the toughest task on the list. I feel like this is a major misconception. It’s not easy to decorate your home for a long time, so decorating is not a problem.
I think the problem is that many people think that decorating is a chore. I know this is often true for people who have never been in a home before but it is the case with many people who have lived in one place their entire lives. A home is a complex and long-term project, and you need more than just a few pieces of furniture to decorate it. If you don’t have time to do that, all that work comes at a cost, too.
I think the problem is that decorating for a long time is often not a chore. It often means a lot of creativity in taking the things you’ve been collecting and putting them in the right place at the right time. To be honest, I have been guilty of this myself. I’ve been putting things in the wrong place at the wrong time for years, so I have probably put in way more decorating than anyone should ever have to do.
The problem is that most people don’t think about the decorating process at all. I have tried to teach decorating to some of my friends who have never even decorated a room before, but they don’t seem to care. They think it’s fun and all, but they don’t spend as much time thinking about it. They just keep their rooms immaculate.
Not everyone is a decorator, however. Many people who decorate their rooms don’t think about the decorating process, they just go there to sleep. That’s because many of these people don’t spend enough time thinking about it.
Decorating is one of those things where you have to think about it. Before you can decide if you want a room like this or not, you have to know what you’re doing. Sometimes that means learning to read a room’s layout and what’s important to where, but most times it means knowing where to start and how to finish.
The problem is that while we think we know what we want, we actually dont know and our brains wont let us know. I have a friend from my high school days who went to a college that had a huge department of decorating. They had a room full of old desks and chairs and stuff. He took home a whole bunch of blueprints and books to follow along with some of the decorating techniques. He spent a good deal of his time reading and studying.
The point is that we think we know where to start and how to finish something, but in reality we don’t know. This is why it’s important to have a good understanding of what your intended purpose is. It’s also why it’s usually best to start without knowing what you want to achieve. You can usually tell exactly what you want to achieve if you know what your end goal is.
That’s why you should always keep a detailed, written note on your desk when you’re doing any sort of DIY project.
I was thinking about that today. I could have written a note when I was taking my car to the mechanic to show that I wanted it to be inspected. I could have added, “This is my main hobby, I have many other hobbies that I am really passionate about.” But I would have taken it a step too far and made it too vague. Instead I just said, “I like cooking and baking and I like sewing and I like to decorate my home.
