I had the opportunity to hang out and take photos at rocky mountain school of photography in the summer of 2010. It was a chance to get up close with some of the best naturalists in the entire world, and I was most definitely impressed. The photos I’ve made from that trip are my favorites.
Yes, The Rocky Mountain School of Photography is a school of photography, but it’s more than that. Its goal is to teach people to take photographs. And in my opinion, that’s the best purpose for photography in general. It’s not to make a living, nor to get a “career”. It’s to take pictures with the goal of teaching people to take better ones.
In the end, I can’t say that I have anything against the school. I think it is a good idea to share your ideas with others. I have met a ton of people who have loved and learned from Rocky Mountain Photography. Its been a great source of inspiration for me, and I think it is a great way to bring people together. I only wish the school had more time to be about photography, but that is just me.

The school is just a few miles up from the studios at Kona Studios and as such has access to the best of all the great lenses in the world. While you’re there you might also meet up with a lot of the photographers on staff that have been in the industry for a while.
The school itself is a large, open space with some of the best lighting and a large white board to work on. As the location is outdoors, students are encouraged to use natural light as much as possible and I can see them using this to their advantage. They’re also encouraged to take photographs in an open format, so I can’t wait to see the final product.
Students work individually, as well as in groups; they’re encouraged to shoot at different speeds and angles depending on their skill level. There’s also some nice variety in the types of photos you can take. Some of the best photo students I have come across are photographers taking portraits of celebrities or politicians.
