I have a soft spot in my heart for avant garde photography because I’ve always really been drawn to the simplicity of it. It’s not complicated. I think a lot of photographers do it for the same reason that artists like to draw: to express their passion for what they love. I think that’s what this is.
I think the simple beauty of avant garde photography is that it’s about capturing beauty. You don’t have to be as fancy as a fashion photographer to get some of the same feeling. The images are simple, but the composition, lighting, and composition of the image is important because so few images of art have that same beautiful simplicity.
The basic elements of a good art image are composition, style, and the ability to capture texture and mood. When it comes to photography, all of these elements are often lost on the average consumer, so it’s a good thing that we have the “art” part of the equation.
For those of you who have never thought about photography in a creative sense before – the idea that you can capture the moment in a photograph and make some little tiny adjustment to the image to make it look better is pretty amazing and a really cool idea.
Well a good art image also brings a lot of other variables, like lighting, composition, and the ability to capture texture and mood. A well-executed art image can make a photograph look more appealing and dramatic, so it’s quite possibly the single most important thing that you can do to improve your photograph.
Taking a photo, you can actually change the way something looks. This is what you can do with artistic photography, and that’s what I use with my camera. I have an easel and a tripod, and a light box, and I just focus on the photograph and I adjust the camera’s focus until I get a beautiful image. Then you can go back and make it better with your own skill and the knowledge that you’ve learned about this subject.
I have my own camera, but I shoot with an old T4 and a 50mm, because I find it easier to focus in low light when youre not holding a heavy camera. The lightbox is the same, just a much smaller and lighter version. The tripod is a simple plastic box with a big tripod ring on it. You just mount the lightbox on the tripod.
You’ll need about thirty minutes to get the hang of it, but the basic idea is that you just move the lightbox around, adjusting the focus. You can use a variety of different lenses if you want to make it your own. I use a 50mm, a 50mm f/1.2, a 70-200, and a 70-200mm.
This seems a bit extreme. It is. But it’s also a great way to take pictures that don’t look like they belong in a book. There are some really great free web resources for you to start with. There is also a free app that you should check out if you’re serious about your photography.
Photography is one of those things that can be pretty intimidating for someone who doesn’t really know what they’re doing. It’s not like you can just use a camera to take photos. You’ll need to know what you’re doing first. Even then you’ll need some basic knowledge of your camera, what you’re aiming for, and how you want to photograph your subject.
