I don’t know about you, but I’m a bit late to the game with the 70s room! But that’s OK, because a few weeks ago I discovered a new way of getting more out of my 70s space. The idea is simple: instead of hiding away an entire wall of space in the basement, I’m going to bring it out into the world with a vintage, artful 70s-inspired, multi-functional room.
Yes, that is exactly what I’m talking about. For $50, I can install a vintage piece of furniture in a room and still have it look like a 70s home, or at least a mid-century modern home. We’ll see how it works, but its the most fun way to play my basement.
Im really loving the new room. I think it’s going to be a great way to hang a lot of my art, and I’m really happy I discovered it now.
I like the idea, but I don’t think it’s going to be quite as fun to use as the original idea. I think the room could use a bit of a “wow” factor. You could make a lot of the same ideas work, but put a bit more thought into the details.
I think this room is going to work even better as a theme room. You could take a design concept and run with it. But make sure to think like an artist and not a designer. For example, my design ideas for the original 70s room are all about color, texture, and materials. However, to make a design work as I want it, I need to make it work in all these different areas.

I’ve seen a lot of rooms that don’t have doors because they don’t have windows. I was looking over various rooms in my house and noticed there was a door that was glass and all that, but they were a different color from the rest of the room. So I thought, “Oh, this is a hallway, so I’m gonna put that in the hallway.” I actually just used the glass as my doorway because I didn’t want to make any of the rooms too similar.
I find a lot of people who feel that there’s a difference between rooms because they think they have room by room rules, but really, you can’t possibly know that much about a room. So if you’re trying to use these rules to your advantage, you’re probably going to want to use the same type of glass as a doorway.
