The GSMIG is an official chapter of the Global Surgery Student Alliance. Not only do surgical experiences in low-income countries allow participants to become leaders in surgical disease world-wide, but the cross-cultural competency developed has an immediate impact on patient care. Several times a year, we host world-renowned speakers on global health and health equity. Mailman School faculty take a leading role in one of the world’s largest annual conferences on global health, all with an eye to promoting health equity. Globalization has changed the way that governments and nongovernmental organizations tackle challenging health issues like HIV/AIDS prevention, the spread of communicable diseases, malnutrition, the diabetes epidemic and access to basic medical care. They had a couple of small children, so we offered a box of diapers. The joint efforts of community members is both inspiring and effective. They are supported by the resolve and dedication of first responders, National Guard, federal and local government agencies, all facing an epic task of rebuilding a coastline. We were pleased to see food vendors still providing free food to the resilient Rockport community.
