The first step is to become aware of what you want to change, what you want to keep, and what you want to change. This is the most important step because it will allow you to start the healing process.
The second step is to start thinking in terms of changing phases. In other words, you need to change each step and each phase of your life in such a way that you’ll be more in sync with the new you. You’ll start noticing patterns in your behavior and noticing how you’ll be happier. You’ll start to realize that your habits are changing. You’ll start to realize that your behaviors are changing.
If you can’t change, then you’re stuck in one phase of your life or another. You could be in a phase where your career is taking you away from a friend who needs your help, but you might not be able to change your career to move closer to them. You could be in a phase where you’re feeling lonely and not in your happy place, but you know that deep down inside you want to be part of something.
Think about your lifestyle and realize that there are phases of your life. If youre trying to change something and you cant, then your lifestyle will change. If your lifestyle is still going up and down, then your behavior will change. If your lifestyle is going up and down, but youre still making time for yourself, then your behavior will change. If you think you have to change something in your lifestyle, then your behavior will change.
As you can see from this chart, interior design phases run the gamut from “what has been happening to me lately,” to “what will happen if I continue to do this,” and “what am I going to do?” The only way to know if its time to change something is to ask yourself the question: “Is this something I really want to change?” If its not, then ask yourself what you really want to do.
So the last phase of the interior design process is about finding what you want to do. When you feel like you are ready to move forward, get motivated and start doing that thing you have been wanting to do. As a rule of thumb, don’t get too excited about going to a new phase just yet and start getting things done. The more stuff you do, the less time you have to do it.
It’s easy to get in the headspace of “I want my home to be so perfect that no one will ever even notice it.” and think, “I’ll go into the next phase and make it so.” but that’s unrealistic. You need to give yourself permission to be willing to make changes to your home, just not everything right away. The first phase is when you take baby steps to see if you can make your home a little better.
The first step is to admit you need to improve. Then you can get started on the next phase. As for the next phase, you can think of it as like a first draft. You’re still going to get it wrong, and you have to admit that, but you’re going to improve from there.
So, this is where I am with interior design. While it’s true that you need to improve your home to a certain point, I think the second step is the most important. The very first thing I did when I moved into this house was to clean everything out. When you move in you have to accept that you probably won’t be able to live in the exact same room every day. It’s okay to live elsewhere while you can. So here’s what I did.
I moved into this house with only a few things on my walls, and I was so happy with this. I had a huge closet, and I had shelving all around it. I had a desk, and I had a couple of bookshelves. I had everything I need. It was clean, so it was a perfect spot for my things. I just needed to get rid of all the stuff and get what I need.
