I made one variation, adding 1 additional tablespoon of cocoa powder, and found them plenty chocolately enough. I didn’t make the sauce, choosing instead to use powdered sugar and whipped cream. My 5 year old liked them quite a bit, and my husband described them as “good” which is pretty high praise. Mine were not crispy on the outside, but the texture was not unpleasant at all. I used an inverted belgian waffle maker, and got 4 1/2 waffles. I also did not have the difficulty with sticking that others described, but I do have a nonstick surface on my waffle maker and I used cooking spray.
