It’s a real shame because it’s a solid game on paper, but the team didn’t seem to know the difference between challenge and annoyance this time around. Fortunately, they more than made up for it with both A Link Between Worlds and Breath of the Wild. On a more basic level, Majora’s Mask is the perfect sequel to Ocarina of Time, using its previous canon as a vehicle to explore uncharted territory. If you’ve finished Ocarina of Time, do whatever you can to try this game out as well. Whether it’s the original Nintendo 64 version or the 3DS remake, you cannot be led astray. In fact, unlike many 3D games from the same era, Majora’s Mask has only gotten better with age.

Called Majora’s Mask, the artifact was created by a long-extinct tribe for use in hexing rituals. Soon, it became clear the mask’s power could lead to calamity if it ever fell into the wrong hands, so the tribespeople sealed it away before anyone had the chance. The salesman went to great lengths to obtain the mask for himself, but the Skull Kid had ambushed him as well. Due to the mask’s influence, the Skull Kid’s antics turned from harmless pranks to truly malevolent acts, and now he wishes to bring about the end of the world. Despite the grim situation, the salesman is relieved when Link agrees to retrieve the mask, having faith that he will complete his mission. In the brief time you control Link before a curse is placed on him, you’re presented with an interface similar to that of Ocarina of Time.

The Skull Kid’s curse didn’t manifest ex nihilo; he infused Link with the spirit of the butler’s son. The game’s introduction foreshadowed its tone long before you had any idea of the darkness lying just beneath the surface. Fittingly, it’s in a manner that ties the ending into the introduction – not unlike what you do whenever you play the Song of Time. One esoteric theme that runs throughout the game is the number four.

And again, the game is just the right length, so the idea of going back to it doesn’t feel like I need to make adjustments to my calendar, which is always wonderful. The structure of Majora’s Mask isn’t immediately apparent in the first few hours of play. This is the Skull Kid, and he immediately steals Link’s ocarina and uses evil magic to turn him into a spritely little tree-beast. Link chases the Skull Kid deep into what appears to be a forest cave, but soon finds himself, actually, inside the bowels of a giant clock tower in a place called Clock Town. Pretty sure that’s true in any Hyrule, no matter what it’s called and who lives there. Back home we’ve got time travelling Ocarinas and sword pedestals and Triforces.

If you roll into the tree, you’ll knock the man and the rupees out. You can collect the rupees while the man rolls about with every indication that he’s broken his leg or sprained his ankle. Majora’s Mask has one Peahat in a hidden grotto in Termina Field; kill it for a Piece of Heart and you never get to fight another one. This wouldn’t be so unusual had the previous game not featured numerous Peahats of the same type all over Hyrule Field. You’ll be searching for the four Zora eggs in the Pirates’ Fortress, which is constantly watched by several guards. Some are sailing in a boat and some are walking on the ground.

The wind whipped and your form, biting through the thin jacket you managed to pull on before shoving you feet into some shoes and tearing out of the dorms. You craved the feeling of hard pavement beneath your feet as you ran. You weren’t paying attention to where you were going, keeping track just enough to stay on campus. You could feel your phone vibrating in your pocket, but you ignored it. Just like you ignored the looks you were getting from other students.

Majora is a depraved entity that delights in causing destruction, and so he calls the Moon down to destroy the land of Termina in three days. I do still have that Legend of Zelda Majora’s Mask piece I’ve been pondering where Link befriends the soul of the yahoo finance etrm deku scrub child while possessed by the mask. I don’t have much written about it, but I really love the world of Majora’s Mask. Ganondorf kept his own cloak drawn around his narrow shoulders. The bearded faces of Hylian men were strange to his eyes.
